How It Is Used
Lit from above with monochromatic light, the thin air film between the plano-convex and plane surfaces produces a pattern of concentric bright and dark rings. Measuring the ring diameters, usually with a travelling microscope, allows the wavelength of the light or the radius of curvature of the lens surface to be found. The screws are adjusted to give a clear, centred pattern.
